Makeup and Self- Confidence

Self-confidence is defined as a feeling of trust in one's abilities, judgment, qualities and power.

Recently, I read an article on a skin and beauty website which analyzed statistics on women, makeup and self-confidence, in summary I was amazed by the mind blowing information I saw before my eyes. Before I get down to my findings; my question is, as women, should our self-confidence rely solely on something designed to alter our appearance?

The skin is the largest organ on the body, to me, makeup has one principle purpose and that is to enhance my appearance without damaging my skin. Do I love makeup? Of course I do... I live for that slay, flawless skin, perfectly blended eyelids and a cheek bone highlight so bright the Gods can see it.

This said article was based on 2017 research, which revealed that 60% of women described themselves as "average and nothing special" when asked to rate their natural beauty. Surprisingly, only 2% of women described themselves as gorgeous without makeup. Thus, showing a huge increase in low self confidence.

The research further proved that 1 in 3 women choose not to leave the house without makeup or some kind of foundation on, which shows that women are becoming heavily reliant on covering up their natural beauty with cosmetic enhancements to feel confident and beautiful.

On the contrary over 70% of women agreed that their eyes are their most loved feature. However, on the downside, 50% of women don't feel confident giving eye contact during conversations unless they are wearing sufficient eye makeup. In summary, over 50% of women state that foundation and mascara are products they can never leave their house without, and that the goal is "covering it up" to feel instantly more attractive.

It is believed that this phenomenon is stimulated by social media and the heighten praises regarded around celebrities and Instagram "Baddies" that post unattainable, edited, photoshopped pictures, that make women and civilization by extension feel as though they have to look a certain way and obtain a certain amount of "likes" to be deemed beautiful.

Makeup should be about enhancing your natural and beautiful features, giving you the power to manipulate trends through self expression, to see what works best for your skin type and face shape. Yes, as a woman, my self confidence is boosted when my makeup is done, because I believe I look like an even more beautiful version of my already gorgeous self. On the contrary I don't believe makeup was designed to be solely depended on for a source of self confidence. All women, are beautiful in her own way, and she possess features unique to herself. Yes!!! that beautiful mole you try to cover up with the foundation, someone else is trying to draw it in with an eye pencil, and we see this common practice with the freckle trend.

In conclusion, remember beauties, whereby makeup enhances your natural beauty, and can boost your self- confidence to some extent, that power as the definition says, the trust in your abilities, judgements and qualities you so desire, won't be found at the bottom of a MAC foundation bottle, so let those pores breathe a little.

Do some internal analysis and ask yourself, "Am part of that 2% that believe, I am gorgeous without makeup?" If your answer is YES!!! your self confidence is your power.
